First Baptist in Kenner, Louisiana, which he left in 2004 when he became director of missions with the Baptist Association of Greater New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina initially reduced the number of churches and members served by the association from 145 to 32. Since then, Joe dedicated his efforts to helping churches and pastors in the area get back on their feet, and the number has grown back up to 93.

Joe earned both a master's degree in church history and a doctor of ministry in evangelism at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He previously has served as a trustee on the Southern Baptist International Mission Board. Joe also is a writer, cartoonist, and an active blogger.

Joe and his wife, Margaret Ann, have three children—Joe, John, and Carla—and eight grandchildren.
