When an adored pastor or leader steps down, how can we smooth the transition for the person who will step into his or her role?

We are going through such a transition right now in our church. Our pastor is retiring at the end of 2008 after 27 years at our church, but he first announced it to the church in January of 2006. We entered into a transition process with the help of a consultant, and plan for our new pastor and our outgoing pastor to serve simultaneously for 6 months or so. That should take place next year. We believe this process will help not only the new pastor, but also the congregation.

You are what is known as an "unintentional interim" pastor, and there are quite a number of processes now going on, and/or about to begin, in your church. In the absence of any "intentional interim" training, through the Interim Ministry Network (IMN), I suggest you buy and digest the contents of "Temporary Shepherds". It is a primary text for interims. It will also provide you with other reference. Also visit the "imn.com" website for ideas and other help.

My way of handling this is to intentionally seek out those who are having the hardest time with it and meet with them one-on-one. Ask lots of questions about the transition, what was really good with the former pastor and what they hope for in the future. Then meet one-on-one with a large number of other people or families to help them get to know you, help you understand their needs and wants, and overall to help ease you in to your new position. This will give you a base of believers in your new role... when you look out into the crowd you'll see their faces and at least find comfort in knowing that they are there supporting you, as the rest of the congregation warms up.
